LAST PLACE
Some songs take a few months to get right, but Last Place I wrote in a flash last October. I sat down with my Microkorg, found a sick preset (b18), settled on a few chords and mumbled some melodies to match it. The music made me fall back into a familiar feeling, one that’s always loomed over me. I think of it as the fear of being a ‘loser’. Being someone who’s left out, forgotten, picked last in the dodgeball game. But in the same way that I’m haunted by this feeling, I’m attracted to it too. There is something very charming about playing the fool, because I think being a loser is the bravest thing you can be sometimes. The loser knows they will lose, but they play the game anyway. They hope, they dream, they act surprised when they come in last again, and they start the cycle over. So maybe I just wanted to root for the underdog in me that night. And if there’s an underdog in you, I hope this song gifts something better than hope, but the knowledge that there’s plenty of beauty in your trying.
Or… maybe I just wanted to write a fun song to dance to ;-)
My new single, LAST PLACE, is out everywhere.
